Preparations

My bike for this tour is a vintage 1995 Pinarello Sestriere in pearlescent blue. It’s my winter training bike and has a standard racing bike drivetrain fitted – so for this tour it will need adapting with much lower gears to cope with the mountains and fitting with Carradice’s ‘Bagman’ gadget to support my saddlebag.

The frame is made from Pinarello’s own blend of steel and features a less than conventionally shaped downtube and thicker seat stays. The oversize tubing provides strength and stiffness while still maintaining the fluid feel of steel over rough roads. This should make it perfect as a fast tourer for the Raid.

We really are planning to travel light on this tour with each of us only taking one Carradice saddle bag as luggage. My final packing list is as follows:

Bottles x2, Toothbrush, Toothpaste, Sunscreen, Flip-flops, Cycling shoes (SPD type so I can walk in them), Sunglasses, T-shirt, Baselayer, Cycling jersey, Bibshorts, Microfiber trousers (that turn into shorts), Rainjacket, 2 x underpants, 2 x socks, Cycle mitts, Razor, Shower gel, Passport, Credit cards, NHS card, and iPhone (doubles up a my camera).
