Day 95: Ivrea –to Aruna

Thursday July 7, 2005, 122 km (76 miles) – Total so far: 5,649 km (3,510 miles)

We enjoyed a much better ride today through some lovely countryside and roads that were not too busy. We are now in the foothills of the Italian Alps so the terrain was anything but flat. The ride over to Lago Maggiore took us through some very pleasant little villages perched on top of some pretty high hilltops.

Our route today was made slightly more difficult because of our poor map of the area. We’re using a French map of Italy. Why we should expect the French to know anything about this region of Italy I’ve no idea. Fortunately tomorrow we’ll be back onto our German map of Switzerland. The Germans seem to be better cartographers than the French. Our German map of Slovenia was excellent, even the Slovenians who saw it seemed impressed!

We are not actually camping in Aruna, but about 8 km further north in a small lakeside village called Lesa – we were given some poor directions to the nearest campsite at a petrol station in Aruna. It’s a really nice campsite though, with a decent restaurant and good showers. There seems to be a strange choreographed disco thing going on outside the restaurant, very Italian.
