Day 88: Val D’’Isère to Modane

Thursday June 30, 2005, 77 km (48 miles) – Total so far: 5,190 km (3,225 miles)

The last of the storms had cleared by the morning so we made the decision to continue up the mountain. The Col de l’Iseran didn’t disappoint with spectacular views both up and down, we even saw a few marmots. We stopped for a sandwich at the summit (2,770m), the highest altitude we’re going to reach on this tour.

The descent to Lanslebourg is a spectacular road that twists and turns as it drops you down in a loop to the valley and the village of Bonneval-Sur-Arc, from here to Lanslebourg it is a short but steep descent. The lower valley on the approach to Modane was equally as stunning as a deep gorge appeared with castles and ruins high up on its hills.

Modane itself is nothing special though, in fact, it’s a bit of a dump. The municipal campsite is OK though and a bargain at only €€12.
