We drove up to Saas-fee, Zermatt’s little brother which is a similar sort of place but with fewer tourists. The glacier here almost reaches the village. It was a really picturesque drive up the valley from Visp, I walked under a waterfall and got some great photos.
We’ve decided on a slight change of route for the coming weeks; instead of crossing to Italy via the Simplon Pass, we’re going to continue west towards the French Alps, the really high ones.
The new itinerary takes us over the Col de la Forclaz, then south towards Galibier via Chamonix. Then we’ll head east again to northern Italy and the southern lakes of Switzerland and on to Venice. We’re also planning to shorten the Italian leg of the trip by about a month. We’ll still make it as far south as Rome but should now be able to reach the South of France before the mistral arrives and get across to Spain by mid-September. Probably.
