Day 77: Innertkirchen –to Fiesch

Sunday June 19, 2005, 67 km (42 miles) – Total so far: 4,791 km (2,977 miles)

Today was really all about the climb of the mighty Grimselpass, one of the most beautiful mountain passes of the Swiss Alps. We rode a tough 27 km up and a spectacular 40 km down the other side to a modern and very expensive campsite at Fiesch. The views of the Rhone glacier and Furkapass from the top of Grimsel were just amazing.

The Tour of Switzerland crossed our path again today, we didn’t see the race itself, but our descent followed the last 10 km of the route from Gletsch to Münster (the race was coming over the Furkapass).

My climb of the Grimsel was marred by yet another broken spoke, then the emergency spoke snapped too – so I had to do half the climb with a slightly buckled rear wheel. But it was the most visually stunning day in the mountains we’ve done so far and I haven’t even mentioned all the pretty little villages along the Rhone valley.
