Monday June 13, 2005, 55 km (34 miles) – Total so far: 4,438 km (2,758 miles)
As we followed a police detour through St Anton it became obvious that something interesting was about to happen, but what? As we headed up the climb to the Arlberg Pass it became clear that the ‘something’ was the Tour of Switzerland, and the race was taking a detour into Austria.
St Anton was the Stage Finish and the Arlberg Pass was the final climb of the day. It was too good an opportunity to miss so we waited at an increasingly busy summit for 3 hours to watch. First the promotional caravans, then the peloton came past. Jan Ullrich was in the Yellow Jersey and was among the first group of riders over the top. The weather was extremely volatile and went from hot and sunny to cold and rainy every half an hour.
