Day 7: Trento to Cavalese

Thursday July 1, 2004, 75 km (47 miles) – Total so far: 445 km (277 miles)

Our route today followed the River Aviso out of Trento towards Cortina along the beautiful Val di Cembra. We saw a bit of off-road action today on our way to Cavalase where the road was closed whilst a new tunnel is built. Over lunch we were told by a friendly hotelier that in order to avoid a massive detour it was possible to take a small mountain road around the road works. The ‘mountain road’ turned out to be little more than a dirt track and without the aid of a local family we met in a small mountain village called Grumès, we would never have made it through. The whole family, including the two young children, led us across the mountain on a tractor borrowed from some local farmers. When the track became impassable, even for the tractor, the father led us the last couple of km on foot.
