Day 7: Roubaix to Amiens

Thursday April 12, 2007, 148 km (92 miles) – Total so far: 752 km (468 miles)

It was a tricky start to the days riding this morning, it was quite difficult to first navigate our way through the amalgamation of conurbations around Roubaix and Lille, then we experienced more than a few difficulties getting through Lens, clocking up a few extra kilometres traversing the city. We would have been absolutely stuffed today had it not been for my trusty compass, especially in Lille.

Today’s lunch was a picnic bought from a supermarket and eaten in the town square of Vimy a small town just north of Arras.

The afternoon was spent in beautiful countryside back in the type rural France I fondly remember from my last big tour. We must have passed through dozens of sleepy farming villages before finally discovering one with a bar serving cold beer.

We’re in a cheap hotel again tonight (no youth hostel in Amiens). Amiens is a big university town and the city centre looks really lively with plenty of bars and restaurants on the banks of the Somme river.
