Day 6: Malcésine to Trento

Wednesday June 30, 2004, 85 km (53 miles) – Total so far: 370 km (230 miles)

We had breakfast in a café in Malcésine at 8:30am, broke for a late lunch at 3pm, and finally checked into our hotel at gone 8pm. This was an exceptionally long day and we only covered 85km. Our first proper taste of the mountains on fully loaded bikes.

Lunch was great and worth a special mention, large plates of spaghetti cooked by a lady in a roadside bar. I think it was the only thing on the menu.

This quote is from a website about the mountains of the Giro d’Italia, fortunately we went down this side, “This ascent from the town of Trento up to Bondone has made cycling history and represents one of the toughest challenges of all, even for champions. The difficulty soon makes itself felt, straight after the turning off the Gardesana state road onto the provincial road no. 85. Cyclists should make sure they’re in good physical condition before attempting this hill.”
