Day 57: Graz to Maribor

Monday May 30, 2005, 92 km (57 miles) – Total so far: 3,529 km (2,193 miles)

Today was the last of the current heat-wave: apparently a storm’s brewing and should hit us some time tonight. We followed the Murradweg again down to the border and crossed some vineyard-laden hills into Slovenia. It was a really beautiful ride today through some great countryside.

The Youth Hostel at Maribor was fully booked and the campsite is still closed so we’re in a fairly luxurious guest house. It’s a really nice place run by fellow cycle tourists. It’s actually in the nearby Maribor ski village where the women’s world cup downhill and slalom was recently held.

Our friendly hosts at Maribor, Peter and Lili, gave us a discount because we’re cyclists. Peter had a collection of vintage bicycles including one from Britain, a Swiss army bike and an Italian Bianchi.

We enjoyed drinking the local wine from these vines, it was sold in screw top litre bottles
