Thursday May 26, 2005, 74 km (46 miles) – Total so far: 3,251 km (2,020 miles)
Last night we were invited for drinks at the large house of the campsite owner, Marcus and his family. We had a nice glass of wine and explained our tour to them. The site is a former factory and has its own power station. It’s taken him 10 years to convert it to a holiday village.
Today’s ride took us into the Austrian Alps and included a few unplanned detours, including the climb of a mountain pass on a tiny dirt track that must have been at least 25% gradient in places.
We arrived in the campsite at Erlaufsee after the reception had shut (at 6pm), it’s quite an attractive campsite but is badly run. The showers need to be fed with 1€ tokens if you want to bathe in hot water, but as the reception closes so early we couldn’t get any, so had to shower in ice cold water. The site manager turned up at 5am to stop campers leaving without paying, if he had stayed a little later the previous evening I think fewer people would try.
