Day 21: Le Mont-Dore to Thiers

Sunday April 24, 2005, 85 km (53 miles) – Total so far: 1,250 km (777 miles)

It was another very wet day again. We took in a couple of early morning ‘cols’ but were forced to stop cycling during our descent to Thiers to thaw out our hands over a crepe and several cups of tea in the charming village called Orcival at 1060m.

We had lunch in Clermont-Ferrand and then pushed on through the rain to Thiers where we’ve checked ourselves into another budget hotel.

According to the news, more than the entire average rainfall for April has fallen from the sky since Friday. Today is Sunday, so that’s a lot of rain for two days.

I had to use the compass for the first time today to navigate a route across Clermont-Ferrand, which is almost entirely devoid of road signs.
