Day 20: Le Mont-Dore

Saturday April 23, 2005

Le Mont-Dore seems to be a town living on its past glories. It was obviously once very prosperous but now looks a bit run down. Maybe it’s just that we’re out of season (for both winter and summer pursuits) and therefore perhaps caught it at a bad time?

However, last night’s meal was superb, local potato and cheese dishes washed down with cheap vin de maison by the jug. We actually ordered 3 random dishes from the menu without knowing what they were (our French not being great). Turns out they were all variations on potatoes with cheese. Explains why the waitress gave us a funny look.

We tackle our first named Col tomorrow and although it’s no higher than the road we came in on, it’s something of a landmark for a trip set to include more than quite a few.

Our hotel in le Mont-Dore (far right of pic), a very reasonable €€30 a night
