Wednesday June 8, 2011, 22 km (14 miles) – Total so far: 166 km (103 miles)
Today was our transfer day. The bikes were boxed up and a taxi took us to Southampton airport for our flight to Pau where we had a rental car waiting to take us to the Atlantic coast. Pau is approximately 100 km from St Jean-de-Luz leaving a short 22km cycle to our starting point in Hendaye.
Everything went like clockwork. Southampton is a small regional airport so we had none of the usual headaches checking in the bikes. Pau is also a small airport so we were off the plane and at our hire car within 30 minutes.
The car was just about large enough for us and the bikes, and the journey to the coast was made even easier with the help of a Sat Nav app I downloaded to the iPhone.
We reassembled our bikes outside St Jean-de-Luz train station (the drop-off point for the rental car) and set off south to Hendaye.
The route followed an undulating cliff-top road called the Corniche Basque, it was a bit blustery but the road was smooth and we only had a short way to go.
We were there early so went for a stroll down the beach before finding dinner on the seafront, the starter was a cracking fish soup. So far so good.
