Day 193: Málaga to Marbella

Thursday October 13, 2005, 73 km (45 miles) – Total so far: 11,922 km (7,408 miles)

We took a very scenic route through the mountains via Alhaurín el Grande and Coin, beautiful green hills full of olive groves and orchards. It was more mountainous than the coast road and avoided some busy roads and tourist resorts like Torremolinos.

We almost fell victim to a rather incompetent thief this morning. He managed to steal one of Agata’s bags whilst we were repairing yet another puncture but neglected to make any sort of getaway. He just sat there right next to us and had to give the bag back when we noticed. Bloody amateur.

We met a strange Danish guy over lunch in Alhaurín who recounted scare stories of crime, the local mafia, guns and robberies involving tourists. He seemed a bit paranoid.

Marbella is surprisingly nice; we expected it to be like Benidorm without the nice beach, but it’s genuinely a really great little town. Highly recommended.
