Day 173: Fiesta! ‘Santa Tecla’ in Tarragona

Friday September 23, 2005

Last night we watched the procession through the old town, medieval knights, people with crazy giant heads and musketeers firing guns. There was a really great atmosphere.

We discovered over supper in the hotel courtyard that we are not alone, we’ve got cockroaches! a couple popped out to greet us – I tried to squash them, but they were too quick for me.

During the festival we witnessed some amazing human towers… what a spectacle. Some were five or six people high with a child at the top – impressively dangerous. Building these human pyramids has become something of a Catalonian sport. Castellers have been building human pyramids here for hundreds of years.

I had my first paella of the tour for lunch, very nice, but I’m not sure it was traditional Spanish fare – the restaurant was run by Koreans.
