Day 17: Beaulieu-s-Dordogne to Mauriac

Wednesday April 20, 2005, 79 km (49 miles) – Total so far: 1,072 km (666 miles)

We’re in very hilly country now, the Dordogne has been joined by an impressive gorge that really adds to the scenery but also to the physical effort required to get about.

We’re staying in a great hotel in Mauriac, a one time Ville d’Etape of the Tour de France. We rode a climb that was recently used in Le Tour, with the names of stars painted on the tarmac, the French climber Christophe Moreau seemed particularly popular, maybe he’s a local boy?

We bumped into some Australian cycle tourists today who are staying in the same hotel as us. They’ve apparently suffered much worse weather than we have and even encountered a bit of snow yesterday. The weather was actually slightly better today with some sunshine, just a little rain and some light hail.
