Day 167: A forced rest day in Ax-les-Thermes

Saturday September 17, 2005

Today’s rest day was not intentional. It rained all night and most of the morning, plus the temperature has dropped by at least 10°c since yesterday. So not ideal conditions for our ascent of the Port d’Envalira. At 2408m, it’s as high as the Groβglockner and we don’t want a repeat of that experience. Having to wear plastic bags on our hands to keep warm once was quite enough!

We considered going for a walk in the mountains today but reconsidered because most of the postcards on sale in Ax feature pictures of bears or wolves. I understand that the wolves are confined to a nearby zoo, but the bears?
