Tuesday September 13, 2005, 45 km (28 miles) – Total so far: 9,962 km (6,190 miles)
Today we rode into Béziers in search of a cycle shop – 10,000 km has taken its toll on the Roberts’s drivetrain. Luckily we passed a large cycle shop (Bouticycle) on our way into town where the staff were excellent. I came away €142 lighter and now have a shiny new cassette, a new chain, and a new middle chain ring. They didn’t have a 26 tooth ring in stock to replace the granny ring and the outer is still in pretty good nick. I also had my saddle tightened. The mechanic didn’t have the special Brooks tool so he made one in his workshop. Agata has a new waterproof jacket, so a very successful bit of essential shopping.
We’re having a nice lunch in the centre of town as I write this. It’s lovely sitting outside in the sunshine. Béziers seems to be a very pleasant town despite many reports on the internet suggesting that it’s run-down and crime-ridden.
