Day 158: Génolhac to– St Maurice-de-Ventalonntvert

Thursday September 8, 2005, 29 km (18 miles) – Total so far: 9,608 km (5,970 miles)

‘Le Deluge’ continues. We only just made it to the Tarn, which even near its source is swollen to the point of bursting after the rains.

Today we climbed the Col de la Croix de Berthel (1,088m) in torrential rain. We had lunch near the summit in a small restaurant that seemed to serve exclusively cheese and could only manage a further 5 km down to le Pont-de-Montvert before the rain won and we checked into a warm dry hotel to thaw out. The room has a bath, our first since Livingo two months ago.

Le Pont is a beautiful little village, even in the rain. I’ll try to get some photos tomorrow when the sun’s out. Then we’ll ride down the Gorges du Tarn. Unlike the Ardèche and the Verdon, the road is down in the valley rather than up on the plateau so the experience should be a bit different.
