Day 150: Castellane to Ste Croix de Verdon

Wednesday August 31, 2005, 62 km (39 miles) – Total so far: 9,170 km (5,698 miles)

The Grand Canyon du Verdon was just spectacular; it’s amazing how the Verdon, which really is little more than a stream, could create such an impressive gorge. Well, that’s what a few million years can do.

After cycling the length of the canyon, we visited the lovely little town of Moustiers Ste Marie, then on to one of the toughest climbs of the tour so far. The climb took us high above the Lac de Ste Croix, then down to the village of Ste Croix itself where we are now camping by the lake in the municipal site. The water in the washrooms here is heated by solar panels, very environmentally sound.

Our dinner tonight is a variation on risotto made with chorizo sausage and red peppers.

Beware of falling rocks: apparently really big blocks of rock can fall from these cliffs
