Day 15: Bergerac to Sarlat

Monday April 18, 2005, 76 km (47 miles) – Total so far: 903 km (561 miles)

The terrain is getting much hillier and is set to become more so over the next few days as the Dordogne River enters the mountains of the Massif Central.

We’re staying in the Hotel Altica in Sarlat. It’s part of a chain that claims to be a ‘new generation hotel experience’. You can check yourself in with a credit card using a machine by the entrance and are given a code which gets you into your room. It’s wonderfully impersonal but quite cheap at only €€30 for a double room with a bath.

We had a really great and reasonably priced meal in Sarlat, we went for the €€12 set menu, with garlic soup as the first of four courses. Delicious.

It goes without saying that it rained all day.
