Day 14: Athlone to Dublin

Friday July 25, 2008, 126 km (78 miles) – Total so far: 1,093 km (679 miles)

We were away early this morning, just after 9am. We had to don the raincoats today as the weather was very grey with patches of light drizzle. We still had the headwind, although it was a lot lighter today, so the riding was more pleasant.

We were basically following the same road today so it was just a case of head down and crank the pedals. We got to Ballivor for lunchtime, just over halfway, and headed into Byrne’s Pub to get out of the rain and to enjoy some home cooking. Today’s special was roasted leg of lamb washed down with Guinness.

Once back on the road the weather had cleared up, the sun even came out for a while. The terrain today was small rollers. Up a bit and then down again – all the way. We stopped in Summerhill on the 100 km mark, at Shaw’s pub, for an afternoon beer.

When we reached the outskirts of Dublin we found it a bit tricky negotiating our way into the city. In the end we used the N3 dual carriageway for a while. Once in the suburbs we call Michal, Agata’s cousin and our host for the next couple of days, to come and get us. He duly arrives on his mountain bike and leads us back to his apartment.

In the evening we head into Dublin city centre for dinner and to visit a couple of the bars for some celebratory beers.
