Day 137: Siena –to Florence (Firenze)

Thursday August 18, 2005, 97 km (60 miles) – Total so far: 8,448 km (5,249 miles)

We took the scenic route to Firenze via San Gimignano (which I can’t pronounce). It is extremely hilly again and some of the climbs are really steep, but it’s beautiful country. I can understand why so many British people sell up and move out here. I reckon we saw some too as there were a few guest houses sporting the Union flag. We also passed a Guinness pub.

Camping in Siena was good value, including our cyclists’ discount it was only €€15 a night. The campsite here in Florence is almost twice that price and nowhere near as good. Our pitch is down-wind of the camper-van service area and stinks of sewerage, we’re packed in like sardines again and the facilities are not much to speak of. Oh, the joys of camping. On the plus side, we do have a cracking view of the Doumo from the campsite bar where there’s a live band playing and they sell Tennents beer. Super.
