Wednesday July 7, 2004, 20 km (12 miles) – Total so far: 819 km (509 miles)
It was roughly a 10km ride each way from our campsite to the port at Treporti where you can catch the waterbus to Venice and the surrounding Islands. Today we took a boat tour from Treporti to Burano, and then on to Murano.
Burano is an island in the lagoon of Venice, with about 7,000 inhabitants, the main industries being fishing, lace making and, of course – tourism. The locals traditionally having sold their locally produced lace to the tourists, sadly most of the lace is now imported from China.
Murano is probably the better known of the two islands, it’s just north of Venice and is famous for its glass making. We had a nice lunch in a canal side restaurant before heading back to the campsite for a swim. An enjoyable but lazy day.
