We took a train from Sorrento to the fascinating excavations at Pompeii, a real treat.
It’s probably best to let the photos do the talking, but highlights included the grooves in the roads caused by iron wheeled carts, the amphitheatre, the public baths and the frescos on house walls. There is a real feel of how the ancient city must have looked, brothels and all.
For the afternoon we became typical British tourists and sat in an English theme pub to watch the FA Charity Shield football match: a brace for Didier Drogba sealing victory over the Arsenal for their West London rivals Chelsea.
