Day 12: Vittório Véneto to Cavallino

Tuesday July 6, 2004, 124 km (77 miles) – Total so far: 799 km (496 miles)

Today was our last full day of riding of what has been a great two weeks in Italy. Now we’ve cleared the Dolomites the land is very flat and slightly downhill to Cavallino. It was quite a long ride today and very hot again now we’re out of the mountains.

Cavallino is on a giant sand bank extending over fifteen kilometres, and in places four hundred metres wide. Cavallino in Italian means horse. The island isn’t horse-shaped and we didn’t see any horses – so I’ve no idea how it got its name. It is just a short boat ride from the centre of Venice and supports about 25 campsites. We picked one at random, a 4-star site with a nice pool for a couple of days of luxury camping before we fly home.

This was the only pic of the day, and last of the tour taken with our digital camera - both the rechargeable batteries have died.
