Day 12: Arcachon –to St Emilion

Friday April 15, 2005, 104 km (65 miles) – Total so far: 759 km (472 miles)

We knew today’s ride wasn’t going to be the most pleasant of the trip but we had to make it from the coast, through Bordeaux, to the Dordogne. Bordeaux was a pleasant surprise, a very attractive city with lots of students, hi-tech trams, a big river and a fairly good cycle path network. We managed to get from one side of the city to the other mostly on car-free paths. The weather was a mixture of storms and sunshine. We were hit by hail again yet still ended up with faces glowing red from the sun.

We’ve blown our €€60 a day budget on a rather nice hotel in St Emilion in the heart of the Bordeaux wine growing region. St Emilion looks fantastic; I’ll have to take a few more pictures tomorrow before we leave.
