Day 1: Chesham to Harwich

Friday April 6, 2007, 162 km (101 miles) – Total so far: 162 km (101 miles)

I was up quite early for the long ride to Harwich and Darren arrived just before 7:30am for a delicious breakfast of Polish sausage served with bread, tomato ketchup and English mustard.
April can sometimes be a bit hit or miss weather wise, but today was a scorcher, as I sit writing this in the hotel bar, my face is glowing from the sun.

The route was selected for us by the very useful www.viamichelin.com website. The site allows you to select your point of departure and destination as well as your mode of transport, in our case bicycles. Then it provides you with a very detailed set of directions along with a handy map. On the whole the route was very good, a few too many busy roads for my taste, but very direct.

Today’s 162 km is the furthest I’ve ever cycled in one day fully loaded, Darren and I were both pretty knackered by the time we rolled into Harwich at 7:30pm.

We are staying in a hotel very near the ferry terminal, the Premier Travel Inn. We have a clean comfortable room and the hotel has a well-stocked bar and a cheap restaurant, we couldn’t ask for more after a long ride.
