Monday April 4, 2005, 92 km (57 miles) – Total so far: 92 km (57 miles)
We started the day with a delicious full English breakfast in Chesham, eaten whilst watching the April rain. We left Chesham via Fuller’s Hill which felt unusually steep on my 50kg loaded bike. It was here that the realisation of our undertaking finally hit me. For the next 8 months, it’s just us and the bikes. It felt a little bit scary.
The rain wasn’t particularly heavy but it drizzled for most of the day. Our route took us out of the Chiltern Hills to cross the river Thames at Windsor. We cycled past the registry office where Charles and Camilla tie the knot in a couple of days, and the Queen of England’s famous castle. Our lunch was bubble and squeak a few miles south in a café in Sunningdale plus a few sweets en-route.
Today’s 92 km was probably a little too much for our first day, we’re both really knackered. We had a nice dinner with our hosts John and Judy, who also provided us with a map and a nice route to Portsmouth.
