Thursday April 21, 2005, 47 km (29 miles) – Total so far: 1,119 km (695 miles)
We paid an extra €2 for a room overlooking the Dordogne and all we can see is the roof of the hotel bar, it’s a nice room though. The standard of 2-star hotels varies enormously across France, last night’s hotel in Mauriac was certainly the best we’ve encountered, it was probably renovated for when le Tour came to town.
We met the Aussie tandem tourists, John and Mary (or was it Kate?) on the road again today, we spent a very pleasant lunch together at the top of a long climb at the very scenic Pont des Ajustants. We didn’t cover so much distance today but took in a few good hills, it looks fairly snowy up on the Massif Central – we just hope it’s not too cold.
Days like today are what this trip’s all about; beautiful scenery with good cycling, glorious sunshine and some tasty food and wine before bed. I saw a giant cat of some sort today, a lynx maybe? several eagles too, we don’t have that sort of wildlife in the Chilterns.
